Instant Testing

Instant testing is more technically referred to as Point-of-Collection Testing (POCT).

This type of instant or rapid drug testing is the perfect solution for situations that require drug test results within minutes.

POCT Tests are available for:

  • Pre-employment Drug Testing
  • Random Drug and Alcohol Testing
  • Reasonable Suspicion Drug and Alcohol Testing
  • Post-Accident Drug and Alcohol Testing

Note: Instant Drug Testing is not available or approved for federally regulated or DOT drug testing programs

Common Drug Testing Panels

6-Panel Drug Tests

  • Similar to DOT 5 panel. Includes amphetamine, methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, opiates, and PCP.

10-Panel Drug Tests

  • Includes amphetamine, methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, opiates, PCP, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, methadone, and propoxyphene.

Breath Alcohol Testing

DOT regulated employers and must perform breath alcohol testing to remain compliant with 49 CFR Part 40 “Procedures for Transportation Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing” using breath alcohol technicians (BAT) using a certified Evidential Breath Testing (EBT) device.

BAT results higher than .02 are subject to disciplinary action depending on the industry:

  • FMCSA – cannot resume safety-sensitive functions for 24 hours
  • FRA – cannot resume safety-sensitive functions for 8 hours
  • FTA and PHMSA – cannot return to work until their next scheduled day and no less than 8 hours from the time the test was taken
  • FAA – cannot return to work for 8 hours

Certified Urine Specimen Collector and Breath Alcohol Training

A drug and alcohol collector is a person who instructs and assists employees at a collection site, receives and makes an initial inspection of the specimen provided by those employees, and initiates and completes the Chain of Custody Form.

The drug collector has direct, face to face contact with the employee. Without the collector ensuring the integrity of the urine specimen and collection process, the test itself may lose credibility.

Under the DOT regulations, an individual performing urine drug and alcohol collection must receive qualification training.

CNS offers a Specimen Collector training course that satisfies the requirements for qualification training as outlined in Federal Regulations, 49 CFR Part 40 and includes the DOT’s rule change that took effect January 1, 2018.
