What is tested in a new driver physical?

The exam typically includes:

  • Vision test (checking for adequate eyesight, including peripheral vision)
  • Hearing test
  • Review of medical history
  • Basic physical examination (e.g., heart, lungs, mobility, neurological function)
  • Screening for conditions that may impair driving, such as uncontrolled diabetes or epilepsy

What Should I Bring to my Physical Exam?

For a new driver physical (non-commercial), the specific documents you need to bring can vary slightly by state or clinic, but generally, you should bring the following:

Used to verify your age and identity.

Examples: passport, state ID

  • A list of current medications
  • Details of any chronic conditions, recent surgeries, or hospitalizations
  • Contact info for your primary care provider (if applicable)
  • For known medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, heart conditions), bring clearance letters or recent evaluations from your doctor
  • If you have a seizure disorder, medical clearance is usually required

Some clinics or states require a signed consent form if the applicant is a minor

Bring glasses, contacts, or hearing aids so they can be tested with and without assistance

Bring your insurance card if the physcial will be billed and is not being paid for out-of-pocket

The state of Pennsylvania requires:

Form DL-180 – “Non-Commercial Learner’s Permit Application”

  • This form includes a physical examination section (page 2) that must be completed by a healthcare provider (physician, CRNP, or PA licensed in Pennsylvania or an adjoining state).

  • The physical must be completed within 6 months prior to applying for a learner’s permit.
