What is a DOT physical or CDL physical exam?

Passing a DOT physical exam will ensure that a CMV driver is fully equipped to handle the physical demands of operating a commercial vehicle, including the long driving hours, hectic and exhausting schedules, and the stress that goes along with it.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)—the organization that sets regulations for the trucking industry—requires drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) to receive physical exams regularly. The FMCSA only allows certified medical examiners (CMEs) to perform DOT physical exams.

What is tested in a DOT physical?

  1. urinalysis
  2. blood pressure/pulse rate
  3. vision

    Be Prepared
What should I bring to my DOT physical exam?

There are several things you can do to be prepared for your DOT physical exam depending on your particular situation, such as drivers who have specific medical issues.

In order for your DOT exam to go as smoothly as possible, arrive early, be prepared, and bring any personal documents and information you might need, such as:

UNDER 21? Those under 21 with chronic health problems, such as heart issues, ADHD, anxiety, etc., need to bring clearance from your treating provider. Clearance should list medications, complications., and the statement, “I feel that the driver can safely and securely operate a commercial motor vehicle”.
